Spain's Digital Nomad Visa
Spain introduced the digital nomad visa in January 2023 as part of the Startup Law (Ley de Startups). This visa allows remote workers and freelancers to live in Spain while working for companies or clients outside the country. It is particularly attractive because of its connection to a favorable tax regime.
Who Qualifies?
The visa is aimed at two groups:
- Employees of companies based outside Spain, working remotely
- Freelancers and self-employed professionals whose clients are predominantly (at least 80%) outside Spain
You must have at least one year of professional experience or a degree from a recognized university. The company you work for must have been operating for at least one year.
Income Requirements
You need to earn at least 200% of the Spanish minimum wage. As of 2025, this translates to roughly €2,520 per month or €30,240 annually. For freelancers, you must demonstrate a consistent income history over the previous year.
Tax Benefits
One of the biggest advantages is the special tax regime. Digital nomad visa holders can apply for the Beckham Law, which taxes you as a non-resident for the first five years. This means a flat 24% income tax rate on Spanish-sourced income up to €600,000, compared to progressive rates up to 47%. Foreign income is generally exempt. This can result in significant savings, especially for higher earners.
Required Documents
- Valid passport
- Clean criminal record (apostilled and translated)
