Getting Connected: Utilities and Internet in Spain

Setting up utilities in Spain is straightforward once you understand the process. It can be frustrating if you do not speak Spanish, but most providers in tourist areas have English-speaking staff. Here is everything you need to know.

Electricity (Electricidad)

Spain's electricity market is deregulated. You choose a provider and a tariff. Major providers include Endesa, Iberdrola, Naturgy, and Repsol. Smaller providers like Holaluz and Octopus Energy often offer better rates.

Key things to understand:

  • Potencia contratada - Your contracted power supply in kW. Most apartments need 3.45kW to 5.75kW. Villas with pools and AC need 6.9kW to 10kW. Higher power costs more per month.
  • Regulated vs free market tariff - The PVPC (regulated) tariff fluctuates hourly. Free market tariffs are fixed. For most expats, a fixed tariff provides predictability.
  • Average monthly cost: EUR 80 to EUR 150 for an apartment, EUR 150 to EUR 300 for a villa.

To set up electricity, you need your NIE, property deed or rental contract, and the previous owner's supply point code (CUPS number). Your gestor can handle the transfer.

Water (Agua)

Water is supplied by local municipal companies. In Malaga it is EMASA, in Marbella it is Hidralia. You cannot choose your provider. Setup requires a visit to the local office with your NIE, property deed, and empadronamiento. Monthly costs: EUR 25 to EUR 50.

Gas

Most properties on the Costa del Sol do not have piped natural gas. Instead, you use butane gas bottles (bombonas) for cooking and water heating. A 12.5kg bottle costs about EUR 18 and lasts 4-8 weeks depending on usage. You can order deliveries from Repsol by phone or app. Some newer developments have piped gas from Naturgy, costing EUR 30 to EUR 60/month.

Internet and Broadband

Fibre optic coverage on the Costa del Sol is generally excellent in urban areas. Speeds of 300Mbps to 1Gbps are common. Main providers:

  • Movistar - Best coverage, especially in rural areas. Fibre + mobile from EUR 45/month.
  • Vodafone - Strong fibre network. Packages from EUR 40/month.
  • Orange - Competitive pricing. Fibre from EUR 30/month.
  • MasMovil / Yoigo - Budget option with good speeds. From EUR 25/month.
  • Digi - Cheapest option. Fibre from EUR 20/month. Growing coverage.

Installation takes 5-10 working days. Most providers require a 12-month contract. An NIE and Spanish bank account are needed for the contract.

Mobile Phone

Spanish SIM cards are cheap. Prepaid options from EUR 10/month with 10GB data. Contract plans from EUR 15/month with unlimited calls and 20GB+. Most broadband providers offer combined packages (internet + mobile + TV) for EUR 40-60/month, which is usually the best value.

Tips for Remote Workers

If you work from home, invest in a good internet connection. Order the highest speed available. Consider a 4G/5G backup router in case your fibre goes down. Coworking spaces in Malaga, Fuengirola, and Marbella cost EUR 100 to EUR 250/month and guarantee reliable connectivity.
