Air Conditioning in Spain: Choosing the Right System

Air conditioning is not a luxury in southern Spain. Summer temperatures regularly exceed 35 degrees on the Costa del Sol and can hit 45 degrees inland. A good AC system also provides efficient heating in winter, making it a year-round essential. Here is how to choose and what to budget.

Types of Air Conditioning Systems

Split System (Single Unit)

The most common choice for individual rooms. One outdoor unit connects to one indoor unit. A quality 3.5 kW split unit (suitable for a 20-30 m2 room) costs 600 to 1,200 euros for the unit plus 200 to 500 euros for installation. Top brands include Daikin, Mitsubishi Electric, Fujitsu and Samsung.

Multi-Split System

One outdoor unit connects to 2-5 indoor units. Ideal for apartments and medium-sized homes. A 2-unit multi-split system costs 2,000 to 3,500 euros installed. A 4-unit system runs 4,000 to 7,000 euros. This avoids having multiple outdoor units cluttering your facade.

Ducted System (Conductos)

A concealed system with the indoor unit in a false ceiling and ducts distributing air to all rooms. The most aesthetically pleasing option. A ducted system for a 3-bedroom apartment costs 4,000 to 8,000 euros installed. For a villa, expect 6,000 to 15,000 euros. Installation requires false ceilings, so it is best done during a renovation.

Aerothermal (Heat Pump)

An advanced system that provides heating, cooling and hot water from one unit. Aerothermal systems cost 8,000 to 15,000 euros installed but are the most energy-efficient option. They qualify for the best energy certificate ratings and often attract government subsidies. Running costs are 50-70 percent lower than traditional electric heating.

Running Costs

Electricity is the main ongoing expense. With current Spanish electricity prices (0.20-0.30 euros/kWh), running costs depend on usage:

  • Single split unit, 6 hours/day in summer: 40-80 euros/month
  • Multi-split with 3 units: 80-150 euros/month
  • Ducted system, whole house: 100-200 euros/month
  • Aerothermal (heating + cooling + hot water): 60-120 euros/month year-round

Energy Efficiency Ratings

Always choose inverter technology, which adjusts power output to demand rather than switching on and off. Look for units rated A++ or A+++ on the energy label. An A+++ unit uses up to 40 percent less electricity than an A-rated unit. The extra upfront cost pays for itself within 2-3 years.

Installation Considerations

  • Outdoor unit placement: Must comply with local noise regulations. Keep units away from neighbours' windows. Some communities restrict placement on visible facades.
  • Electrical capacity: Check your contracted power (potencia contratada). You may need to increase it, which costs 50-200 euros through your electricity provider.
  • Drainage: Indoor units produce condensation. Ensure proper drainage to avoid water damage.
  • Community rules: Many apartment buildings have specific rules about AC unit placement and size.

Permits

Simple split system installation usually needs no permit. Ducted systems that require false ceilings may need an obra menor licence (200-500 euros). Outdoor units on listed buildings or in historic centres may need special approval. Always check with your ayuntamiento.

Best Time to Install

Install in spring (March-May) or autumn (October-November). Summer is peak demand season, and installers charge premium rates or have long waiting lists. Off-season installation can save you 10-20 percent on labour costs.
